Explore the Rich Heritage of Pichwai
Pichwai (also pichhavai, pichhvai, and so on), literally meaning ‘that which hangs from the rear’ from the Sanskrit words “Pichh” means back, and “wais” means hanging, are big devotional Hindu painted pictures, usually on cloth, that depict Krishna.
They are primarily manufactured for hanging in Hindu temples of the Pushtimarg devotional tradition, particularly the Shrinathji Temple in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, which was built in 1672. They portray the Leelas of Shrinathji, a local form of Krishna and the center of Pushtimarg devotion.
Aurangabad was another location associated with them. Aside from aesthetic appeal, the goal of these traditional paintings is to communicate Krishna stories to the ignorant. Temples have different image sets that change according to the calendar of festivals honoring the deity.
